Gender in Football

Every weekend millions of sports fan sit in front of the television for hours at a time to watch their favorite teams. I am one of those fans, and while watching it's easier to notice how gender is displayed when watching from home on the television. The players seem heroic and the fans seem to be worshipping kings.

This weekend I noticed that the ways the players are perceived on both the television and in real life makes them seem like gladiators in the Colesium. When watching from home I've noticed that the camera angles make the field and players look enormous, given the players are big, they appear to be giants. Furthermore, the way that the announcers talk about these players you'd think that their playing ability could cure cancer. Also, thousands of fans come from miles away once a week to watch their teams play, almost religiously.

These players are no different from the average person, they are all humans. But they are percieved as giant men from fans. Is this because it takes a very athletic person to play the sport that these players are seen as very masculine or is it because as fans we almost worship them that we give them this masculinity?
